Bangladesh to Lodge Formal Protest with India Over Alleged ‘Illegal Push-Ins’ at Border

June 5, 2025

The Government of Bangladesh is preparing to send a formal diplomatic note to India, expressing strong objections to what it terms as “illegal push-ins” of individuals across the shared border. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated that Indian authorities have been forcibly returning individuals labeled as foreigners into Bangladeshi territory without adhering to established deportation protocols.

These actions have reportedly intensified in recent weeks, particularly in the Indian state of Assam. The Assam government has been actively identifying and detaining individuals classified as illegal foreigners by the state’s Foreigners’ Tribunals. Reports indicate that these individuals, primarily of Bangladeshi origin, are being pushed into the no-man’s land between India and Bangladesh.

The situation has raised significant ethical and legal concerns, with human rights organizations and legal experts questioning the handling of migrants and the implications for India-Bangladesh diplomatic relations. Family members of those affected have petitioned the Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court concerning their relatives’ whereabouts, highlighting the human impact of these actions.

Bangladesh’s planned diplomatic note aims to address these concerns and seek a resolution through established bilateral channels. The move underscores the importance of adhering to international norms and agreements in managing cross-border issues.

This development adds to existing tensions between the two nations, which have previously clashed over border fencing activities. In January 2025, Bangladesh summoned India’s High Commissioner to express “deep concern” over the construction of fences at five locations along the border, actions Dhaka claimed violated a bilateral agreement.

As both countries navigate these complex issues, diplomatic engagement and adherence to established protocols remain crucial in maintaining regional stability and mutual trust.
