Bangladesh Plans to Revive WWII-Era Airbase Near Siliguri Corridor With Chinese Help, Raising Alarms in India

May 23, 2025

A major geopolitical stir has erupted after reports confirmed that Bangladesh is seeking Chinese assistance to revive a long-defunct World War II-era airbase in Lalmonirhat, located just 12-15 kilometers from the Indian border and approximately 135 kilometers from the highly sensitive Siliguri Corridor—also known as the “Chicken’s Neck.”

The strategic location of the airbase has sparked concerns in New Delhi, as the Siliguri Corridor is a narrow stretch of land that connects mainland India to its northeastern states. Any perceived threat to this corridor is considered a direct national security issue for India.

According to multiple Indian media reports, the move is being closely watched by Indian defense and intelligence agencies. The potential Chinese involvement in infrastructure so close to this vital Indian lifeline is being viewed as an extension of Beijing’s growing influence in South Asia, and part of a broader strategic encirclement.

India has responded by reinforcing its military presence in the region. The Indian Air Force has already deployed Rafale fighter jets and advanced missile systems like BrahMos and S-400 air defense systems near the area. Defense analysts suggest that this build-up is meant as both a deterrent and a readiness measure.

Reacting strongly, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a stark warning, stating that if Bangladesh attempts to threaten India’s Chicken’s Neck, India will not hesitate to target Bangladesh’s own strategic corridors. “If Bangladesh attacks our Chicken’s Neck, we will attack its both Chicken’s Necks,” said Sarma in a recent press statement.

This development comes at a time of heightened regional sensitivity, as both China and Pakistan continue to strengthen strategic ties with smaller South Asian nations. The current move by Bangladesh could therefore potentially shift regional alliances and trigger a larger strategic recalibration in South Asia.

India, while maintaining diplomatic engagement with Dhaka, is expected to push back firmly against any move that could compromise its territorial integrity or shift the military balance in the region.
