The Voice News – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on 21 May 2025, stressing the critical need for sustained international pressure on Russia to secure a just and lasting peace.
In a message shared on Telegram, Zelensky said, “It is important that all decisions are coordinated. Then the sanctions will work. Without pressure on Moscow, a just peace cannot be achieved.”
The discussion came shortly after a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Following that conversation, President Trump appeared to retreat from his earlier push for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, suggesting that resolving the conflict was no longer within his direct responsibility. This shift has sparked concerns in Kyiv and among its allies, who worry it could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and expose Ukraine to greater risk amid the war initiated by Russia.
In light of these developments, Zelensky has intensified efforts to engage with European leaders, urging them to strengthen and coordinate sanctions against Moscow. He continues to emphasize that unified international action is essential to pressuring Russia into meaningful negotiations.
The call with NATO’s Secretary General highlighted Ukraine’s continued appeal for robust alliance support in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
