Kane’s Brace Powers England’s Stunning Comeback Against DR Congo

Date:

England staged a dramatic comeback to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in their first knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice to send the Three Lions into the pre-quarterfinals.

The match at Atlanta began on a difficult note for England as DR Congo struck early in the seventh minute. Forward Brian Sipenga found the net with a powerful right-footed shot from the left side of the box after receiving a well-placed assist from captain Chancel Mbemba.

England struggled to find an equalizer in the first half despite dominating possession and creating several chances. Jude Bellingham came close in the 30th minute with a header, but DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made a brilliant reflex save. Marcus Rashford also missed an opportunity minutes later after his shot was blocked by a defender.

DR Congo nearly doubled their lead before halftime when Yoane Wissa’s first-time effort hit the post, allowing England a narrow escape. Harry Kane also appealed for a penalty after a collision with goalkeeper Mpasi, but VAR ruled against it.

England continued their relentless pressure after the break, but Mpasi remained outstanding, denying multiple efforts, including another close-range attempt from Bellingham.

The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute when Kane rose highest to head home from Anthony Gordon’s cross, leveling the score at 1-1.

Kane completed the turnaround in the 87th minute, firing a powerful right-footed strike inside the box to seal England’s victory and secure their place in the next round.

With his two goals, Kane took his World Cup tally to 13, surpassing Brazilian legend in the tournament’s scoring charts.

England will now face on July 5 in their bid to reach the quarterfinals.
