ICC Warns Pakistan Over Decision to Boycott India Match in T20 World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following reports that Pakistan has decided to boycott its group-stage match against India in the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The India–Pakistan match, scheduled for 15 February, is widely regarded as the most commercially lucrative fixture of the tournament. However, the decision to boycott the match was announced by the Pakistani government through a post on social media platform X. About three hours after the post, the ICC released an official statement expressing serious concern over the potential implications of such a move.
In its statement, the ICC said it has not yet received any formal communication from the PCB regarding the decision. The council emphasized that selectively opting out of a particular match is incompatible with the fundamental principles of a global sporting event, where all teams are expected to compete under equal conditions as per the official schedule.
The ICC stressed that its tournaments are built on the values of sporting integrity, competitive fairness, consistency, and neutrality. Participating in some matches while refusing others, the statement said, undermines the spirit and credibility of international cricket competitions.
While acknowledging and respecting the role of governments in shaping national policy, the ICC noted that such a decision does not align with the broader interests of global cricket or the millions of fans worldwide—including supporters in Pakistan itself.
The governing body further urged the PCB to carefully consider the long-term consequences of the decision on Pakistan cricket, warning that it could have serious and lasting effects on both the national board and the wider international cricket ecosystem, of which the PCB is an active stakeholder and beneficiary.
Concluding the statement, the ICC reaffirmed that the successful organization of the 2026 T20 World Cup remains its top priority. It called on all member boards, including the PCB, to act responsibly and work collaboratively toward a mutually acceptable solution that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders.
