Bangladesh Police Ready to Resort to ‘Crossfire’ if Government Approves: IGP

- October 28, 2026, 03:55 AM ET

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has said police would not hesitate to resort to “crossfire” if necessary, provided the government approves it.

He made the remarks on Monday, October 26, at the inauguration of Islamic banking services of Community Bank in Dhaka’s Chawkbazar.

The police chief said police were necessary to ensure people could live in peace and security. However, he cautioned that freedom did not mean people could do whatever they wanted.

Urging people not to take the law into their own hands, Fakir also said it was unfair to blame the police for every incident.

The IGP raised concerns about the spread of drugs in neighbourhoods and alleged links between drug trafficking, members of the former Awami League and some police personnel.
He also said 27 police members had been suspended over the past two months.

Regarding former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s possible return to Bangladesh, Fakir said the matter was not the police’s concern. However, he warned that police would take legal action against anyone attempting to create unrest in the country.
