Portugal’s preparations for life without Cristiano Ronaldo suffered no immediate setback as they defeated Denmark 4-2 on Thursday to continue their winning run in the UEFA Nations League.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp after head coach Jorge Jesus suggested that the 41-year-old forward could again be left on the bench. Just 24 hours later, Portugal produced one of their biggest wins of the season.
João Cancelo opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing from a pass by Gonçalo Ramos, who had stepped into Ronaldo’s place. Denmark levelled through Mikkel Damsgaard in the 23rd minute, but Portugal restored their lead two minutes later when Ramos made it 2-1.
Denmark equalised again in the 53rd minute through Rasmus Højlund, who celebrated by performing Ronaldo’s trademark ‘Siuuu’ celebration.
Portugal regained control in the 67th minute when Vitinha converted from close range following Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick. João Félix then sealed the victory in the 87th minute, putting Portugal 4-2 ahead.
Portugal will conclude the international break at home against Norway on Sunday, while Denmark will travel to face Wales.
Ronaldo started Portugal’s opening Nations League match against Wales but was substituted in the second half after missing several chances. He was then left on the bench for the entire match against Norway before departing the national team camp.
