The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Saudi Arabia, including strikes that reportedly targeted civilian and energy infrastructure.
In a statement on Saturday, September 19, the council called on the Houthis to immediately halt the military escalation and reiterated its previous condemnation of attacks and threats against shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
The Security Council also expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed that the kingdom has an inherent right to self-defence under international law.
The council further reaffirmed its commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
The statement comes amid continuing tensions involving the Houthis and regional security, particularly around maritime traffic through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb, a strategically important shipping route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
The developments have raised concerns over the security of civilian infrastructure and international shipping in a region already affected by prolonged conflict and instability.
