Manchester United were eliminated from the English League Cup after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
United, managed by Michael Carrick, made a flying start as Shea Lacey and Mason Mount scored within the opening 10 minutes to put the hosts firmly in control.
Brighton, however, responded before halftime when Charalampos Kostoulas capitalised on poor marking by Ayden Heaven to pull a goal back.
The visitors completed their comeback in the second half. Pascal Gross equalised in the 65th minute before Maxim De Cuyper struck five minutes later to give Brighton a 3-2 lead.
Carrick introduced Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha late in an attempt to rescue the match, but United were unable to find an equaliser.
The defeat was met by boos from the home crowd at the final whistle, adding to United’s difficult week after their 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the derby on Sunday.
Brighton’s victory also marked the second time in nine months that they have knocked United out of a domestic cup at Old Trafford. They previously defeated United at the stadium in the FA Cup in January.
