Brigadier Fawzi Mansouri, head of military intelligence for the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA), was killed in a car bomb explosion in Benghazi on Monday evening, according to sources cited by Reuters.
The bomb exploded in a vehicle parked outside Mansouri’s home in the Hawari area of Benghazi, sources said. The attack took place on Monday, August 10, but it remains unclear who was responsible.
The killing is likely to further heighten concerns over Libya’s deteriorating security situation. Despite a major ceasefire agreement reached in 2020, rival political administrations and armed groups continue to compete for power and influence across the country.
Libya has remained divided since 2014, when the country became split between rival political and military factions based in the east and west. The division followed years of instability after longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011.
The LNA, commanded by military strongman Khalifa Haftar, controls large parts of eastern and southern Libya and remains one of the country’s most powerful military forces.
The latest attack underscores the continuing security challenges facing Libya, where political divisions and the presence of armed groups have complicated efforts to establish lasting stability.
