Greece Rescues Dozens of Migrants, Most from Bangladesh and Sudan

Date:

Greek authorities have rescued dozens of migrants off the coast of the island of Crete, most of whom are nationals of Bangladesh and Sudan. Several Egyptian nationals were also among those rescued.

According to Greek media outlet Dimokratia, around 40 migrants were rescued on Thursday. More than 200 people have arrived in Crete over the past 48 hours after making dangerous sea journeys from the Libyan coast.

The migrants were taken to the port of Ierapetra by a coast guard patrol vessel and a fishing boat. Registration and identity verification procedures were subsequently initiated at the port.

Earlier, another 112 migrants arrived in Greece in two separate boats.

The first group consisted of 56 people, including 31 Sudanese nationals and 25 Bangladeshis. Another 56 migrants arrived in the second group, comprising 47 Bangladeshis and nine Egyptians.

The latest arrivals highlight the continuing flow of migrants attempting to reach Greece through the dangerous eastern Mediterranean migration route from North Africa.
