Chelsea kicked off a new era under head coach Xabi Alonso with a thrilling 6-4 victory over Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers in a pre-season friendly, although defensive frailties overshadowed an impressive attacking display.
The standout performer was Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, who came off the bench to score a sensational late hat-trick, rescuing Chelsea after the Premier League side had briefly fallen behind in a match that featured 10 goals and five lead changes.
Pedro’s performance comes after he was left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad despite an impressive club season, adding further weight to arguments that the striker deserved greater recognition on the international stage.
Chelsea fielded a youthful lineup at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, with experienced defender Tosin Adarabioyo joined by Liam Delap and Dario Essugo in the starting XI. Teenage prospect Dastan Satpayev marked his debut with an early goal to put the Blues ahead.
However, Western Sydney repeatedly exploited Chelsea’s vulnerable backline to stay in the contest. While Alonso’s side looked dangerous going forward, defensive errors allowed the hosts to score four times and threaten an upset.
With Chelsea trailing in the second half, Alonso introduced several first-team stars, and the momentum quickly shifted. Joao Pedro took center stage, scoring three goals within a matter of minutes to complete a superb hat-trick and secure a dramatic victory for the English club.
Speaking after the match, Alonso praised the Brazilian striker’s mentality.
“He is very hungry,” Alonso said. “He is determined to have a great season. He has already scored a lot of goals, but he wants even more.”
Despite the win, Chelsea’s defensive display remains a major concern ahead of the new campaign. Western Sydney capitalized on several mistakes, with Anthony Pantazopoulos and Aidan Hammond finding the net, while Dylan Scicluna also benefited from a deflected clearance to score. Another defensive lapse, including a misplaced pass, allowed Awan Lual to add to the hosts’ tally.
On a more positive note, young winger Jamie Gittens also impressed after coming off the bench, scoring shortly after his introduction to continue his strong pre-season form.
Chelsea still have five pre-season fixtures remaining, giving Alonso time to address the team’s defensive issues before the Premier League season begins. Their next test comes on Saturday against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney, a match expected to provide a sterner assessment of the Spaniard’s progress.
