After Lengthy Talks, US and EU Finalize Major Trade Agreement

Date:

Following extensive negotiations, the United States and the European Union (EU) have reached a landmark trade agreement, marking a significant shift in transatlantic economic relations. The deal was announced after a high-level meeting between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Turnberry, Scotland.

According to the agreement, the United States will impose a uniform 15% tariff on European goods. This move comes as a compromise, after previous threats from Washington to raise tariffs to as high as 30%.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference at President Trump’s golf resort, where he described the outcome as a “great deal.”

“We made a deal today—this is great,” Trump said. “It’s wonderful to reach an understanding without playing any games. This will bring us closer together… a sort of partnership will be formed.” He also described the deal as “the biggest one so far,” hinting that similar agreements with three or four other countries could be forthcoming.

In return, the European Union has agreed to invest $600 billion in the United States and to purchase $750 billion worth of energy and military equipment from American providers.

“Energy is an extremely important element,” Trump emphasized during the briefing, highlighting the strategic significance of the trade pact.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed Trump’s optimism, calling the agreement “a major deal” and praising the cooperation between the two economic giants.

“This is an agreement between the world’s two largest economies, achieved after tough negotiations,” von der Leyen said. “It will bring much-needed stability and predictability for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.”

She also confirmed that both sides had agreed to a standardized 15% tariff across all relevant sectors. “I knew from the beginning it would be difficult, but we managed to reach a good outcome,” she added.
