Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has categorically dismissed widespread speculation suggesting that President Asif Ali Zardari may step down or that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir is seeking to assume the presidency. In a televised interview, Sharif labeled the rumors as “baseless and politically motivated,” asserting that no such proposals are under consideration.
“Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed any desire to become the president, nor is there any such plan in the offing,” the Prime Minister stated. He emphasized that his working relationship with both Zardari and Munir is grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to Pakistan’s stability and progress.
The rumors, which gained traction on social media and certain media outlets, have been described by government officials as part of a “coordinated misinformation campaign.” Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the speculation, alleging that hostile foreign entities may be involved in spreading disinformation to destabilize Pakistan’s political environment.
“We are fully aware of who is behind this malicious campaign,” Naqvi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “There has been no discussion—formal or informal—about the President resigning or the COAS aspiring to assume the presidency.”
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary-General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari also weighed in, dismissing the rumors and reaffirming the party’s support for Zardari. He noted that the government cannot function without PPP’s backing and called the speculation “political mischief” lacking any constitutional basis.
