Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained a minor leg injury during an Israeli airstrike on June 16 that targeted a high-level meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in western Tehran. The strike, which involved six precision-guided missiles, aimed to trap senior officials by destroying the building’s entry and exit points.
According to Iranian media affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the attack occurred while Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i were attending a closed-door session. Power was cut off during the explosions, but the officials managed to escape through a pre-planned emergency hatch.
President Pezeshkian later confirmed the incident in an interview with American commentator Tucker Carlson, accusing Israel of attempting to assassinate him: “They did try, yes… They acted accordingly, but they failed.”
The airstrike has drawn comparisons to Israel’s past operations targeting Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, with Iranian outlets highlighting the precision and intelligence behind the attack. Iranian authorities have launched an investigation into possible espionage or internal leaks that may have enabled the strike.
The June 16 attack was part of a broader 12-day conflict during which Israeli forces reportedly targeted multiple Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists. While no fatalities were reported among the council members, the incident has intensified tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv, raising concerns about the vulnerability of Iran’s leadership and the potential for further escalation.
