481 women raped, 320 murdered in Bangladesh in six months

From January to June of this year, a total of 1,555 women, including 736 girls, have been subjected to violence in Bangladesh. Among them, 481 women, including 345 children, were raped. Of these, 106 women, including 62 children, were gang-raped, and 17 women, including 10 children, were murdered after being raped. In the past six months, 51 women, including 35 children, have been victims of sexual harassment, and 34 women, including 25 children, have been subjected to stalking. Additionally, 320 women, including 61 children, have been murdered.This information was revealed in the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad’s report on violence against women and girls (January–June). The Mahila Parishad sent this report to the media on July 1, highlighting the statistics on violence against women and girls for the month of June.Since Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed power, the law and order situation in the country has severely deteriorated. Alongside murder, theft, and robbery, incidents of rape have increased significantly. Members of his advisory council have even brazenly entered airports carrying deadly firearms, disregarding laws and regulations.The Mahila Parishad’s Central Legal Aid Sub-Committee prepares this monthly report based on news published in 15 selected national daily newspapers.According to the report, in June alone, 203 women and girls—116 women and 87 girls—were victims of violence. Among them, 65 women, including 43 children, were raped. Of these, 8 women, including 5 children, were gang-raped. Three women, including two children, were murdered after being raped. Additionally, there were attempts to rape seven children.The report further stated that five women were victims of stalking in June, two of whom committed suicide because of the harassment. Various causes led to the murder of 68 women, including 13 children. Eleven women, including two children, died under mysterious circumstances. One woman was a victim of acid violence. Three women were burned, two of whom died due to their injuries.In addition, last month one woman was tortured over dowry demands. Six women experienced physical abuse in domestic violence incidents. Twenty-two women, including six children, committed suicide. Two children were abducted. One woman fell victim to cybercrime. There were two incidents of child marriage. Moreover, nine women, including seven children, were subjected to various forms of violence.
