Police Dismantle Foreign Militant Network, Arrest 36 Bangladeshis in Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysian police have dismantled a foreign militant network with the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals suspected of involvement in extremist activities inspired by Islamic State (IS) ideology.Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the arrests were made during a three-phase security operation carried out by the Special Branch in Selangor and Johor starting April 24.Of the 36 arrested, five individuals have been charged under Chapter VIA of the Penal Code in the Shah Alam and Johor Bahru Sessions Courts. Meanwhile, deportation orders have been issued for 15 others, and 16 remain under investigation.Saifuddin revealed that intelligence efforts uncovered the group’s efforts to spread extremist beliefs, recruit members within their community, fundraise for terrorist activities, and plot to overthrow their home country’s legitimate government.“I want to make it clear that Malaysia will not be a safe haven or a staging ground for any foreign extremist elements,” Saifuddin said, adding that this operation demonstrates the government’s firm stance against threats to national security.He praised the professionalism and efficiency of Malaysian security forces in protecting national sovereignty and public safety, stressing that any attempt to use Malaysia as a base or transit point for extremist movements will face swift and decisive action.The Home Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening intelligence, enhancing enforcement, and working closely with both domestic and international security agencies to ensure Malaysia remains peaceful, stable, and free from terrorist threats.
