Ammunition Magazine Found in Youth Adviser’s Bag at Dhaka Airport

Dhaka, June 29, 2025 — A security scare unfolded on Sunday morning at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport when an ammunition magazine was discovered in the carry-on bag of Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Youth and Sports.Airport security personnel detected the magazine during pre-boarding screening procedures for Turkish Airlines flight TK-713, which was scheduled to depart Dhaka for Istanbul en route to Morocco. Mr. Mahmud was on his way to participate in the Marrakesh OIC Youth Capital 2025 event.Upon identification of the magazine inside a small pouch, Mr. Mahmud immediately acknowledged the item and explained that it had mistakenly been packed in his luggage. He expressed sincere regret for the oversight and promptly handed over the magazine to his protocol officer, airport officials confirmed.“This morning, during pre-boarding screening, a magazine was found in Mr. Asif Mahmud’s bag. Upon detection, he stated that it was accidentally included in his luggage. He expressed his apologies and handed it over to his protocol officer,” said Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, speaking to Dhaka Post.Under the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority’s Aeronautical Publication Information (AIP), Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s own security policies, and the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, passengers are strictly prohibited from carrying ammunition or magazines in their cabin baggage. However, these items may be transported in checked luggage if properly packed in a locked container and declared to the airline in advance.The incident highlights the critical importance of adhering to international aviation security standards, especially for high-profile passengers. While Mr. Mahmud’s swift cooperation helped avoid further complications, experts note that lapses like these can cause significant delays and security concerns.Turkish Airlines flight TK-713 departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on schedule at 7:00 AM local time.Mr. Mahmud is expected to join other delegates at the Marrakesh OIC Youth Capital 2025 event, where discussions will focus on empowering youth across OIC member states through sports, education, and leadership initiatives.
