Sweden Successfully Tests AI-Powered Fighter Jet

An artificial intelligence (AI)-controlled fighter jet has taken flight without a pilot. Not only did it complete a successful takeoff and landing, but the AI also demonstrated the ability to fire weapons and engage in dogfights.According to Aviation International News (AIN), Sweden has successfully tested the AI-powered Gripen E fighter jet, which can fly and conduct combat missions without a human pilot. As part of Saab and Helsing’s “Project Beyond,” the jet’s AI systems, command center, and mission capabilities have been upgraded. The AI-powered aircraft even conducted a symbolic dogfight over the Baltic Sea against a manned aircraft.Recently, Saab carried out three test flights of the Gripen E fighter jet equipped with an AI agent developed by German defense company Helsing. Between May 28 and June 3, control of the Gripen E was handed over to the AI agent from the pilot. During these tests, the AI was able to make complex tactical decisions in combat scenarios and could issue commands for firing weapons.In the final test flight, the command center faced a Gripen D as a target, using real-time sensor data integration to track it. This flight tested various beyond-visual-range (BVR) configurations, including different distances, speeds, and angles—even with command-and-control support disabled. Saab is currently evaluating the results of these tests, as researchers continue to train the AI agent and enhance its BVR air combat capabilities.Under the sponsorship of Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Saab’s “Project Beyond” is exploring how technologies like AI can be utilized. The new AI system allows updates and additions to mission software without affecting flight-critical software, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming clearance testing.Peter Nilsson, Head of Advanced Programs in Saab’s Aeronautics business area, called this a significant achievement for Saab. “We are on the path to demonstrating qualitative superiority through advanced technology and making AI effective in the skies. The rapid integration of Helsing’s AI into the Gripen E and the successful test flights are a testament to our capability-building,” he said.
