Google DeepMind and Google Research Launch ‘Weather Lab’ Website Featuring AI Weather Models

Date:

June 13, 2025 —Google DeepMind and Google Research have launched a new online platform called Weather Lab, aimed at showcasing their latest advances in artificial intelligence-powered weather forecasting. The new website, which went live today, provides the public and scientific community access to a range of Google’s AI weather models. These models promise to offer faster and more accurate predictions of global weather patterns, leveraging deep learning to analyze complex atmospheric data.According to Google, Weather Lab is part of the company’s broader effort to democratize access to cutting-edge weather forecasting tools. The platform includes interactive visualizations, near real-time forecasts, and an overview of how Google’s AI models compare to traditional forecasting systems.“Weather forecasting has always been a challenging scientific problem,” said a spokesperson from Google DeepMind. “By applying AI to this domain, we hope to deliver more timely and precise predictions, helping communities around the world better prepare for extreme weather events and long-term climate trends.”Google’s new models build upon its breakthrough GraphCast AI system, which last year demonstrated the ability to outperform conventional numerical weather prediction models on several key benchmarks.Meteorologists and climate scientists have expressed interest in the technology’s potential, particularly in improving forecasts for severe weather such as hurricanes, floods, and heatwaves — all of which are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change.Weather Lab also allows users to compare AI-based forecasts with official data from traditional agencies, providing a transparent view into the models’ strengths and limitations.Google said it plans to continuously update the platform with new data and features, and to collaborate with academic and government partners to further validate and refine its AI forecasting tools.
