The Voice News: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has imposed a curfew in the city.
The decision was made on Tuesday night (June 10) in an attempt to control the situation following several days of vandalism and violence, according to French news agency AFP.
In response to journalists’ questions, Mayor Bass said, “I have declared a local state of emergency.” A curfew has been imposed in the city’s main commercial area (downtown) to prevent further looting and destruction.
According to Reuters, Mayor Bass hinted that the curfew may remain in place for several days.
The protests began earlier this week in response to the Trump administration’s strict anti-immigration crackdown. In an effort to control the situation, authorities first deployed the National Guard, followed by Marine personnel. However, the protests have now spread from Los Angeles to other parts of the United States.
Protests have erupted in cities such as Seattle, Austin, Chicago, and Washington D.C., where participants are holding anti-ICE placards and chanting slogans. They have disrupted traffic around government offices.
While some of the protests have remained peaceful, there have also been clashes with law enforcement in several areas. Tear gas has been used, and multiple people have been arrested.
The protests have also spread to New York, San Francisco, and Santa Ana. In these cities, demonstrators have clashed with law enforcement following immigration raids.
Protesters are preparing for even larger demonstrations in the coming days. One of the planned events is the “No Kings” campaign, which is scheduled to take place nationwide on Saturday — the same day President Trump is expected to hold a military parade in Washington.
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom harshly criticized Trump’s actions on Tuesday. In a brief statement, he said, “Trump has cast a kind of military net over Los Angeles.”
Newsom made the comment in response to the Trump administration’s deployment of nearly 5,000 troops in Los Angeles. Initially brought in to guard government buildings, the troops are now reportedly assisting immigration enforcement agents in making arrests.
Governor Newsom alleged that Trump’s harsh immigration policies are no longer targeting only criminals but have now turned against ordinary working-class people, such as building doormen, gardeners, day laborers, and tailors.
