The Voice News: Los Angeles is witnessing another day of widespread protests as tensions escalate following recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that led to dozens of arrests, including prominent labor leader David Huerta. Huerta, a key figure in the SEIU California labor union, is scheduled for arraignment today, with mass demonstrations planned to coincide with his court appearance.
The protests, which erupted over the weekend, have spread across key neighborhoods including Westlake, Paramount, Compton, and downtown L.A. Demonstrators have blocked highways, clashed with law enforcement, and vandalized property—including incidents involving flaming self-driving cars and attacks on police vehicles. Over 60 protesters have been arrested so far.
In response, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of nearly 2,000 National Guard troops and placed 500 U.S. Marines on standby, bypassing the state government. California Governor Gavin Newsom has condemned the move as unconstitutional and announced plans to file a lawsuit, calling it a “violation of state sovereignty.”
Mayor Karen Bass has urged calm, emphasizing that most of the unrest is localized, while expressing concern over the federal government’s “unnecessary escalation.” Civil liberties groups, including the ACLU and labor unions, have denounced the federal crackdown and are leading peaceful rallies and walkouts today in solidarity with detained immigrant workers.
International concern is also mounting as several journalists, including members of the Australian and British press, reported injuries from rubber bullets fired during live coverage of the weekend protests.
With tensions mounting, all eyes are now on downtown Los Angeles as protesters regroup, legal battles begin, and questions grow about the federal government’s approach to immigration enforcement.
