Russia’s Military Build-Up Near Finnish Border Raises NATO Concerns
Helsinki, May 13 – A significant increase in Russian military presence near the Finnish border has sparked concerns across NATO, drawing comparisons to the troop movements seen before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to analysts, Russia is rapidly expanding its military infrastructure at key locations in its northwestern regions. Satellite images reveal troop camps, refurbished airbases, and new storage facilities for armored vehicles, signaling a strategic escalation.
This development follows Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership, which extended the alliance’s shared border with Russia by over 800 miles. Experts believe this military expansion is part of Russia’s promised response to NATO’s growing presence.
Swedish Chief of Defence Michael Claesson acknowledged the situation, stating, “When we applied for NATO membership, Russia said it would take such steps. We are now seeing that happen.”
NATO has responded by increasing military exercises and deployments in the region, including Exercise Lightning Strike, which showcased heavy artillery and multinational cooperation.
