DHAKA, June 17 — Popular Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim has rejected widespread social media claims that he was attacked in the Indian city of Kolkata, describing reports circulating online as inaccurate and exaggerated, even as the incident sparked a fresh political confrontation involving anti-Awami League and pro-Awami League elements.
The controversy emerged after reports spread across social media platforms alleging that Mosharraf Karim—one of the most recognizable actors in Bangladesh and a familiar face among Bengali-speaking audiences on both sides of the border—had been confronted by an aggressive group while visiting Kolkata with his wife, actress Robena Reza Jui.
The claims quickly gained political overtones after National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan blamed what he described as supporters of the Awami League for the alleged incident.
However, the actor himself has publicly downplayed the matter, saying there was no significant incident worthy of major media attention.
Actor Rejects Viral Narrative
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Mosharraf Karim sought to calm the growing controversy.
“Nothing happened that is worth writing about. The way it is being spread on social media is not accurate. There is no incident significant enough to report,” he told the publication.
The actor explained that he was in Kolkata primarily to spend time with friends and travel, not for any professional commitment.
“Several of our friends are here. I came to meet them and spend some time. As you know, I like travelling. I am not here for any film shooting. I will return to Dhaka within three or four days,” he said.
While Mosharraf Karim did not completely deny that an interaction may have occurred, he made clear that the situation was being amplified far beyond reality.
“People exaggerate things on Facebook. But there is not enough substance in this incident to write a news report. In reality, nothing significant happened,” he also told journalists.
His comments stand in contrast to numerous social media posts claiming that he had either been “attacked” or surrounded by a hostile crowd in Kolkata.
As of Tuesday evening, no video or independently verified evidence had emerged showing an organized assault on the actor.
Mosharraf Karim remains one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated performers, with a career spanning television drama, film and digital platforms. His popularity extends beyond Bangladesh into the Indian state of West Bengal, where Bengali-language productions regularly attract audiences familiar with his work.
