New Delhi/Dhaka, June 5, 2026 — India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has formally received his credentials from Indian President Droupadi Murmu, clearing the way for him to assume his diplomatic post in Dhaka.
According to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Trivedi is expected to arrive in Bangladesh shortly to begin his assignment. Upon arrival, he will present his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, a formal step that will officially mark the commencement of his tenure as India’s High Commissioner.
The Government of India recently appointed Trivedi, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Union Railway Minister, to the key diplomatic position in Bangladesh.
At 75, Trivedi brings extensive political and administrative experience to the role. He served as India’s Railway Minister in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while representing the Trinamool Congress. In 2012, he resigned from the post after facing opposition from his party leadership over a proposal to increase passenger rail fares in the national budget.
In addition to his role as Railway Minister, Trivedi also served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. He has been a member of both houses of the Indian Parliament, representing West Bengal in the Lok Sabha and later Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha.
Trivedi left the Trinamool Congress in February 2021 and joined the BJP the following month.
His appointment is notable because India has traditionally appointed career diplomats to ambassadorial and high commissioner positions in neighboring countries. Analysts note that Trivedi’s posting represents the first political appointment to a neighboring nation by New Delhi in more than three decades.
The move comes at a significant time in Bangladesh-India relations, with both countries seeking to strengthen bilateral cooperation on trade, connectivity, security, and regional affairs.
