PSG Overcome Arsenal to Retain Champions League Trophy

Date:

BUDAPEST, May 31, 2026 — Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the final at Budapest on Saturday night.

The victory marked PSG’s second consecutive Champions League triumph, while Arsenal’s hopes of capturing the club’s first European Cup title came to a heartbreaking end.

The match remained tightly contested throughout regulation and extra time. Arsenal struck first in the sixth minute through Kai Havertz, who capitalized on a fortunate deflection before racing into the penalty area and lifting a clinical finish over PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov from a difficult angle.

Despite dominating possession for much of the first half, PSG struggled to create clear-cut chances against Arsenal’s disciplined defensive setup. The French side enjoyed nearly 77 percent possession but failed to register a shot on target before halftime, while Arsenal made the most of their limited opportunities.

Arsenal nearly doubled their lead midway through the opening half when Bukayo Saka delivered a dangerous cross into the box, but Safonov reacted sharply to prevent further damage.

PSG continued to press after the break and eventually found a way back into the contest. In the 64th minute, Ousmane Dembélé calmly converted a penalty to level the score at 1-1 and shift momentum in favor of the French champions.

Both teams pushed for a winner during the remainder of regulation time and the additional 30 minutes of extra time, but neither side could break the deadlock, sending the final to a penalty shootout.

In the decisive shootout, PSG held their nerve to secure a 4-3 victory, sparking celebrations among players and supporters as the club claimed consecutive Champions League titles.

The result cements PSG’s status as one of Europe’s dominant forces, while Arsenal must once again wait for their elusive first Champions League crown despite a spirited performance in the final.
