Aung San Suu Kyi moved to house arrest, Myanmar military says

Date:

Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred to house arrest, according to state media, marking a significant shift in her years-long detention following the Myanmar military coup 2021.

The 80-year-old Nobel laureate had been held in custody—believed to be in a military prison in Nay Pyi Taw—since being ousted from power in 2021. A statement from junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said her remaining sentence would now be served at a designated residence.

However, doubts persist over the claim. Her son, Kim Aris, said he had no confirmation of her current condition or whereabouts, dismissing a state-released image as outdated and “meaningless.” He stressed that without direct communication or independent verification, the family remains sceptical.

Suu Kyi has largely been out of public view since her arrest, with no confirmed contact with family for over two years and limited access even for her legal team. The only widely seen image prior to this announcement dates back to a court appearance in 2021.

Her original 33-year sentence has been reduced multiple times, and analysts suggest the latest move could signal a possible easing of restrictions. The military leadership, facing prolonged international isolation, may be seeking to reshape its global image following a controversial election that critics say entrenched military control.

Once celebrated globally for her non-violent resistance and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Suu Kyi’s reputation was later damaged by her defence of Myanmar at the International Court of Justice against allegations of genocide linked to the military’s 2017 campaign against the Rohingya population.
Her reappearance in state media—however limited—has raised speculation about potential further changes in her status, including the possibility of partial or full release.
