Powerful Explosions Rock Ukraine’s Capital Kyiv

Powerful explosions shook Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Saturday (December 27), with multiple blasts reported across the city. Authorities believe Russia carried out a large-scale missile strike targeting the capital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram, “Explosions in the capital. Air defense forces are operating. Stay in shelters.”
Ukraine’s Air Force issued an air alert across the entire country, warning that drones and missiles were heading toward Kyiv and other regions.
An AFP journalist reported hearing several loud explosions and seeing massive orange fireballs lighting up the sky.
The attack comes just ahead of a scheduled meeting on Sunday in Florida between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, where discussions are expected to focus on ending the war with Russia. The Russian assault appears to have taken place immediately before these planned peace talks.
On Friday, Russia accused Zelensky and European Union leaders of attempting to undermine US-mediated peace negotiations.
Meanwhile, President Trump has reportedly prepared a 20-point draft peace agreement aimed at ending the Russia–Ukraine war. According to the proposal, if both sides agree, hostilities would cease immediately. Russian forces would remain in the territories they currently occupy, while Ukrainian troops would withdraw from eastern regions, which would later be designated as an economic zone.
