Cristiano Ronaldo is facing disciplinary action after leaving Portugal’s national team camp ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark, prompting the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to launch an investigation into alleged misconduct.
The 41-year-old forward reportedly left the camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his omission from the starting line-up against Norway. Ronaldo claimed the coach had failed to honour a commitment regarding the amount of playing time he would receive.
Ronaldo later apologised to his teammates and supporters, acknowledging that leaving the camp had been inappropriate. He also urged the federation to impose disciplinary measures over his conduct.
On Saturday, the FPF confirmed that a disciplinary investigation had been opened against Ronaldo and referred the case to its disciplinary investigation commission.
“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro,” the federation said in a statement.
The FPF also confirmed that Ronaldo was initially subject to an automatic temporary suspension under the applicable rules, followed by an additional suspension. The federation classified the proceedings as urgent.
However, no final disciplinary decision has yet been announced. The FPF said details of the proceedings would remain confidential until the investigation is completed.
Earlier this week, Ronaldo said he would accept whatever punishment the federation imposed. He also reaffirmed his desire to continue representing Portugal at international level.
The outcome of the investigation could determine the extent of the disciplinary consequences for the veteran forward, who remains one of the most prominent figures in Portuguese football.
