KATHMANDU, August 13 — Former Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba returned to the country on Thursday after spending nearly five months abroad.
Deuba arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu at around 12:30 p.m. after traveling via Hong Kong. According to his personal secretary Bhanu Deuba, he went directly to his rented residence in Maharajgunj, where he had lived before leaving the country.
The 80-year-old former prime minister left Nepal for Singapore on February 25, saying he was traveling for a medical check-up. However, details about his treatment, including the nature of his health problems and where he received medical care, have not been publicly disclosed.
Deuba’s wife, former foreign minister Arzu Rana Deuba, and their son Jaybir also traveled abroad. Their current whereabouts were not immediately known after Deuba returned to Nepal.
The family’s prolonged stay overseas has also raised questions about the expenses related to their medical treatment, travel and other costs.
Deuba is a five-time former prime minister and remains one of Nepal’s most influential political figures. His return has sparked renewed discussion about his possible political activities and future role.
Deuba’s government was ousted following the Gen-Z-led protests in 2025. The movement initially began over restrictions on social media but expanded into broader demonstrations against corruption, unemployment and economic hardship. Violent clashes with security forces and attacks on government buildings eventually intensified the political crisis.
Following the political upheaval, a new government came to power under Balendra Shah.
Deuba’s return to Nepal is therefore being closely watched as the country continues to navigate the political changes that followed last year’s youth-led uprising.
