Dhaka, 10 August, A four-member Indian delegation comprising senior security officials arrived in Dhaka on August 9 at the invitation of Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), according to an Indian media report.
The delegation reportedly landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2:56pm on an Air India flight from New Delhi. The members travelled together and entered Bangladesh through the international airport.
The visit comes amid speculation over Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible trip to New Delhi in the second week of September to attend the BIMSTEC summit.
According to the report, bilateral security cooperation is expected to be among the key issues discussed during the visit. However, details of the delegation’s meetings and official program have not been disclosed.
The four-member delegation includes a team leader and three other officials. Their identities and ranks have not been made public, reportedly for security and operational reasons.
The Indian officials checked into the Radisson Blu hotel in Dhaka after arriving in the capital. Arrangements for their accommodation and other logistical requirements were reportedly made by the DGFI.
The visit is considered significant in the context of ongoing institutional communication between Bangladesh and India on security-related matters. However, the specific issues discussed, and the outcome of any meetings remain unknown.
IRI Meets BNP and Jamaat Delegations
The same report also said that a delegation from the Washington-based International Republican Institute (IRI) held separate meetings with senior representatives of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami on August 9.
The IRI delegation met senior BNP leaders at the party chairman’s office in Gulshan from 11am to noon. Discussions reportedly focused on the institute’s ongoing programmes and future plans aimed at strengthening and sustaining Bangladesh’s democratic progress.
The participants exchanged views on strengthening democratic institutions, advancing democratic processes and increasing public participation.
Senior IRI representatives attended the meeting, including a senior director, a representative of its Center for Insights in Survey Research, a technical adviser and a resident program director. Government and political representatives also reportedly participated in the meeting.
Later that afternoon, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, a separate meeting was held between an IRI delegation and representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami at the party’s central office in Moghbazar.The meetings indicate that the Washington-based organisation is maintaining engagement with multiple political stakeholders in Bangladesh as part of its broader programmes concerning democratic institutions, political participation and democratic development.
