KHAGRACHHARI, Bangladesh, July 28 (News Desk) — Rival indigenous armed groups exchanged heavy gunfire in Bangladesh’s southeastern Chittagong Hill Tracts early Tuesday, in what local sources described as a clash over territorial control.
The confrontation took place at approximately 5:30 a.m. in Chikonchakon Karbari Para, under Logang Union in Panchhari Upazila of Khagrachhari district. According to local residents, armed members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF–Main) and the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS–Main) exchanged an estimated 200 to 300 rounds of gunfire.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, and the exchange of fire had ceased by later in the morning, with the situation described as calm.
The motive behind the clash is believed to be a dispute over territorial influence, although this has not been independently verified.
Bangladesh’s law enforcement agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of publication. An official assessment of the situation is awaited.
