Modi Unfazed by U.S. Tariffs, Says India Ready to Bear Losses to Protect Rural Economy

Date:

Despite looming 50% tariffs from the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirms India’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding farmers, fishermen, livestock rearers, and the grassroots economy.

New Delhi, August 7, 2025 — In a bold and defiant statement amidst rising trade tensions with the United States, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India is fully prepared to absorb any potential economic losses in order to protect its rural and grassroots economy. His comments come in response to the Biden administration’s proposed imposition of up to 50% tariffs on certain Indian exports.

Speaking at a public event, Modi said, “Even if the United States imposes 50% tariffs, we are not afraid. India will stand firm in defending the livelihoods of its farmers, fishermen, animal rearers, and the rural backbone of our economy.”

The statement signals a clear prioritization of India’s agrarian and village-based sectors at a time when global economic policies and protectionist measures threaten developing economies. Modi emphasized that national interest, especially that of the rural majority, must come first.

India’s rural economy, which includes agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry, supports over 60% of the population and remains a political and economic cornerstone for the Modi administration. While analysts warn of potential short-term impacts if trade disputes escalate, the Indian government appears resolute in its approach.

This firm stance is likely to resonate with domestic audiences but could complicate ongoing diplomatic and trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi. However, Modi’s message was clear: India will not compromise the welfare of its grassroots citizens, even in the face of global pressure.
