Washington, D.C., July 17, 2025 — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a stark warning that recent Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military targets could jeopardize fragile efforts to stabilize Syria and rebuild the war-torn nation.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Rubio described the situation in southern Syria as “deeply concerning,” citing escalating violence in the Druze-majority city of Sweida.
“We are very worried about the violence in southern Syria. It is a direct threat to efforts to help build a peaceful and stable Syria,” Rubio said, adding that Washington is in “repeated and constant talks” with both Israeli and Syrian officials.
Clashes and Airstrikes Escalate Tensions
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched over 160 strikes in Sweida and Damascus earlier this week, targeting Syrian government forces accused of attacking Druze civilians. The strikes included hits on the Syrian Defense Ministry and the presidential palace, prompting international condemnation and fears of broader conflict.
Israel defended its actions as necessary to protect the Druze community, which has historic ties to Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel “will not allow Syria to become a second Lebanon,” referencing concerns over militant entrenchment near its borders.
U.S. Pushes for De-escalation
Rubio emphasized that the Biden administration is working behind the scenes to broker a ceasefire and restore diplomatic momentum. “We think we’re on our way toward a real de-escalation,” he said, noting that both sides had agreed on “specific steps” to reduce hostilities.
The U.S. has also called on Syrian forces to withdraw from Sweida to allow for humanitarian access and community-led reconciliation. Meanwhile, hundreds of Israeli Druze have crossed into Syria to support their kin, further complicating the security landscape.
International Reactions
The United Nations and European Union have condemned the Israeli strikes, urging all parties to respect Syria’s sovereignty and avoid actions that could derail peace efforts. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for “an immediate cessation of all violations” and stressed the need for transparency in Syria’s transitional process.
As the region teeters on the edge of renewed conflict, Rubio’s remarks signal a shift in U.S. strategy—balancing support for Israeli security with a renewed focus on post-Assad reconstruction and regional diplomacy.
