Pakistan Assumes Presidency of the UN Security Council

Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council. At a time when the world is grappling with wars, political divisions, and doubts about the effectiveness of international institutions, Pakistan has taken over the rotating presidency of the Security Council.According to a report by Pakistani news outlet Dawn, while this presidency is largely symbolic, it comes at a strategically significant moment for Pakistan.This marks the eighth time Pakistan has served as a member of the Security Council. Islamabad took office as a non-permanent member in January 2025, with the term lasting until the end of 2026. However, this is Pakistan’s first presidency of the Security Council since 2013.Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated, “The world is currently in a state of turmoil—with increasing wars, complex geopolitical conflicts, and serious threats to international security.”He added that taking over the presidency of the Security Council at such a time is a major responsibility for Pakistan.The presidency of the Security Council rotates monthly among its members. Although the position does not hold executive power, the presiding country can influence the Council’s agenda and the framing of discussions. Many around the world view the Security Council as largely ineffective on critical issues such as the crises in Gaza or Ukraine. Therefore, Pakistan’s leadership will be closely watched by the international community.Ambassador Asim emphasized, “Pakistan has always supported peaceful resolution of disputes. We are staunch advocates of dialogue and diplomacy.” He pledged that Pakistan will work to ensure collective action, transparency, inclusivity, and accountability during its presidency.Ambassador Asim concluded, “Based on the UN Charter and the expectations of the international community, we will work together with all member states.”Notably, the UN Security Council has 15 members—5 permanent (the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, and France) and 10 non-permanent members who serve two-year terms. Each member assumes the presidency for one month in rotation.
