Earthquake Off Peru’s Coast Shakes Lima, Leaves One Dead and Five Injured

The Voice News: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off Peru’s central coast on Sunday morning, jolting the capital city of Lima and the nearby port city of Callao. Authorities confirmed that one person was killed and five others injured in the aftermath.According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 11:35 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the Pacific Ocean—23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Callao, just west of Lima.Police Colonel Ramiro Clauco told RPP radio that the victim, a 36-year-old man, was killed in northern Lima. He had been standing outside his vehicle waiting for a passenger when part of a wall from the fourth floor of a nearby construction site collapsed and struck him on the head.The Emergency Operations Center reported that five people were injured and are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals. The quake also caused structural damage to roads and educational institutions.President Dina Boluarte is traveling to Callao to assess the situation, the Peruvian presidency announced on X (formerly Twitter).Local media footage captured scenes of vehicles crushed by falling debris, damaged homes, and billboards toppled by the tremors. All districts of Lima felt the shaking, said Hernando Tavera, president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, during an interview with TV channel N.The earthquake temporarily interrupted a professional football match at Lima’s Alberto Gallardo Stadium, and a mass at the city’s cathedral was paused as panicked worshippers evacuated.Peru lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire—a geologically active region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
