Dr. Yunus Questioned Over Lack of Meeting with UK PM Starmer Despite ‘Official Visit’

Although Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s four-day trip to the United Kingdom has been labeled an “official visit” by the interim government in Bangladesh, questions have arisen as to why the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, did not meet with him.On June 12, prior to receiving the “King Charles III Harmony Award,” Dr. Yunus was interviewed by BBC journalist Rajini Vaidyanathan, who directly asked why there had been no meeting with Prime Minister Starmer, and how disappointed Yunus was by this absence. The exchange was aired on the BBC’s program The World Tonight, where the presenter highlighted the contradiction: “This is being described as an official visit. But there is no meeting with the Prime Minister. Why is there no meeting with Keir Starmer?”In response, Dr. Yunus said,“We were very eager to meet with him (Keir Starmer). Maybe he was busy or for some other reason it wasn’t possible. But this actually creates a great opportunity for me. Since he is currently busy, I invite him to come to Bangladesh. We can spend time together, show him what’s happening, and he can understand the full situation. This is a historic moment we are going through—a new beginning as we leave the past behind.”Rajini followed up with a sharper question:“You say he was busy. But you are the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, his political equal. Nearly a million Bangladeshis live here in the UK. Bangladeshi culture is deeply rooted in British society. How disappointed are you that during your official visit, he could not make time to meet you?”Dr. Yunus replied,“I don’t know whether I should be disappointed or he should be. I don’t know what opportunity was missed or why. That’s why I said he should come to Bangladesh, take a moment to reflect, understand the situation, and grasp the significance of this moment.”The exchange has raised fresh questions about the legitimacy and recognition of Yunus’s role as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, especially given the lack of official engagement from key Western leaders during his controversial visit.
