US Deploys Warships Closer to Israel Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

Date:

The Voice News: As Israel braces for a potential retaliatory strike from Iran, the Pentagon has repositioned two guided-missile destroyers toward the Eastern Mediterranean to bolster regional defenses.According to two U.S. defense officials speaking on condition of anonymity, the destroyers—equipped to counter both ballistic and cruise missiles—were already operating nearby and are now being redirected. Their presence is expected to strengthen the defense of U.S. assets in the Middle East and support Israel’s efforts to repel any incoming Iranian attacks. This move follows Friday’s Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military positions. Similar U.S. naval support proved crucial in October, when American warships helped intercept a significant Iranian missile barrage aimed at Israel.Earlier this year, during a U.S. bombing campaign against Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, Washington deployed additional firepower to the region, including two Patriot missile batteries from Asia and a THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system. Those defenses remain in place. However, in recent weeks, the Trump administration scaled back some of its enhanced naval deployments. The Harry S. Truman carrier strike group has returned to Virginia, while the Carl Vinson strike group continues operations in the Arabian Sea.The Department of Defense has not yet issued an official comment on the latest redeployments.
