Democrats Decry Senator Padilla’s Forcible Removal at Noem Press Conference

The Voice News: Democrats expressed outrage after Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) was forcibly removed, handcuffed, and taken to the ground during Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday. The press event was addressing federal ICE raids amid rising protests.Padilla, a key member of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Immigration Subcommittee, approached Noem’s podium to ask a question. Law enforcement officers intervened, citing security concerns, and detained him. Video shows Padilla identifying himself during the altercation, though DHS claims he did not do so beforehand or display his Senate credentials.Later, Padilla was seen speaking calmly with Noem in a separate room. Noem said they spoke for 10–15 minutes and exchanged contact information. She did not expect him to face charges but criticized his approach as “political theater.” DHS and Secret Service defended the officers’ actions, saying Padilla had ignored commands and was perceived as a threat.Padilla said he attended the event seeking answers about deportation policies after Homeland Security failed to respond to his inquiries. “I was there peacefully,” he stated.Democratic leaders were furious:Chuck Schumer called it “sickening.”Gov. Gavin Newsom called the event “dictatorial” and “shameful.”Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said Padilla was “unpatriotically manhandled.”Sen. Adam Schiff labeled it an “assault on democracy.”Former VP Kamala Harris called it a “stunning abuse of power.”The Congressional Hispanic Caucus demanded a formal investigation. Some members stormed House Speaker Mike Johnson’s and Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s offices, demanding accountability.Rep. Jimmy Gomez urged Noem to testify before Congress. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the incident “an assault on freedom of speech.”Padilla’s office said he was at the venue for a scheduled NORTHCOM briefing and had intended to engage Noem on policy. House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned Padilla’s behavior as “wildly inappropriate,” asserting “you don’t charge a Cabinet secretary.”Thune said he was gathering all facts before commenting further.
