The Voice News: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over the reported vandalism of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral house in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. In her letter, Mamata highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the property, stating that Tagore had visited the house multiple times during his lifetime and composed several literary works there.
Describing the act as not merely the destruction of a building but the desecration of a “fountain of creativity,” Mamata termed the incident both “shocking and unfortunate.” She emphasized that the vandalism strikes at the heart of Indian heritage, sensibilities, cultural wealth, and collective nostalgia.
The Chief Minister appealed to the central government to engage in diplomatic talks with the neighboring country’s authorities—specifically the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. She stressed the need for a strong message to ensure justice for those responsible and to prevent similar acts in the future. Mamata wrote, “This attack is not just on a heritage structure, but on the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, who vehemently opposed the Partition of Bengal during the Swadeshi movement. Bengali language and literature will forever remain indebted to him.”
The incident allegedly took place on Tuesday at Tagore’s historic “kachari bari” (estate house) in Sirajganj. Reports indicate that several individuals entered the premises and vandalized furniture and windows. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute with security personnel over a token issued for parking a bicycle, which escalated into a physical altercation. One staff member was also allegedly assaulted.
Local police have begun an investigation and are working to identify the culprits.
In her letter, Mamata reminded Modi that Rabindranath Tagore is a global figure, revered not just in Bengal or India but around the world. She called for international condemnation of the attack and urged India’s central government to take the matter up seriously with Bangladesh to ensure justice and the preservation of shared cultural heritage.
