Recent peace negotiations held in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine have ended without agreement, as both sides exchange accusations and maintain irreconcilable positions.
Stalled Negotiations
The talks aimed to establish a ceasefire and facilitate the exchange of prisoners and fallen soldiers. However, Russia accused Ukraine of indefinitely postponing these exchanges, while Ukraine denied the allegations, asserting that no specific timeline had been agreed upon and accusing Russia of unilateral actions outside the agreed process.  
Divergent Demands
Russia insists on negotiations based on the 2022 Istanbul agreements, which include Ukraine’s neutrality, limitations on its military capabilities, and restrictions on foreign military presence. Ukraine and its Western allies view these terms as undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. 
International Reactions
The breakdown in talks has drawn international concern. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva has called for the United Nations to lead peace efforts, proposing a neutral international commission to mediate between Ukraine and Russia.  
As diplomatic efforts falter, the conflict continues to escalate, with both sides engaging in intensified military actions, further complicating prospects for a peaceful resolution.
