Bandarban Begins Recovery as Floodwaters Recede and Road Links Reopen

Bandarban, Bangladesh – May 31, 2025: After days of relentless rainfall and severe flooding, the situation in Bandarban is showing signs of improvement. Floodwaters are gradually receding, and key road communications are being restored, bringing relief to residents and authorities alike.

The district experienced significant rainfall, with 222mm recorded over 48 hours until 6:00 PM today, followed by an additional 143mm in the next 12 hours, according to Sanatan Kumar Mondal, Deputy Director of the District Meteorological Office. This deluge caused the Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Bakkhali rivers to swell dangerously, leading to widespread flooding and landslides that disrupted road connectivity, particularly along the Ruma-Thanchi and Lama-Alikadam routes.

In response, combined efforts from the army, fire service, police, and disaster management teams have been instrumental in clearing debris and restoring mobility. Road links between Bandarban and Ruma have been reestablished, with buses, CNG-run auto-rickshaws, and other vehicles resuming operations.

Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ara Nipa reported that while no major casualties have been confirmed, several houses in high-risk areas sustained partial damage. The district’s emergency disaster management committee convened virtually to coordinate relief efforts, and 220 shelters along with emergency service booths have been prepared to assist those affected. Financial aid of Tk 5,000 is being considered for impacted households.

Despite the improving weather, authorities caution that the risk of fresh landslides remains high due to saturated soil conditions. Evacuation advisories are being announced via loudspeakers in vulnerable areas, and residents are urged to remain vigilant.

As Bandarban embarks on the path to recovery, continued cooperation between residents and authorities will be crucial in mitigating further risks and rebuilding the community.
