Shuvendu visits Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata over attack allegations on Matua community in Jessore

The Voice News: Shuvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, along with BJP MLAs, submitted a memorandum to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission located at Park Circus in Kolkata on Friday (27 May). The protest was organized following allegations of arson and attacks on the Matua community’s houses in Jessore, Bangladesh.

Addressing the media after submitting the memorandum, Shuvendu Adhikari said, “Many relatives of the Matua community live across the border in Bangladesh. In a village in Jessore district, a total of 19 houses were set on fire, among which 10 belonged to the Matua community and 9 to the Vaishnav community. Both these communities follow Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism). Millions of Matuas live on both sides of the border. Therefore, it is impossible to remain silent against this incident. We have come to the High Commission to register our protest.”

He further asked, “Do you want the exodus of Hindus to start from here as well?”

The opposition leader informed, “The Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh has told me that so far 7 people have been arrested in connection with the attacks. The Bangladesh government has provided financial assistance of 6,000 taka each and 30 kg of rice to the affected families. However, this aid is not sufficient.”

He added, “If the Bangladesh government permits, we want to send financial aid from India through the Guru Anukul Thakur Mission of the Matua community and the Bharat Sevashram Sangha. We stand with the affected Hindu community in Bangladesh.”

Shuvendu Adhikari also said, “To assess the situation of the affected Matua families on the ground, a delegation led by BJP MLA Swapan Majumdar will visit Bangladesh. The Bangladesh High Commission has already stated that if we want to send a delegation, they will arrange visas quickly.”

In conclusion, he said, “We expect that the authorities in Bangladesh who maintain law and order will take appropriate measures.”
