The Independence

Date:

Mujtoba Ahmed Murshed

Oh my independence, I first met you in my tender years,
Barely twelve, yet standing firm upon the streets—
A thousand voices rose, the banners wild with fire,
“Brave Bengali, take up arms!” the clarion call aflame.

My father led the vanguard, fierce with the leader’s zeal,
Those golden memories still burn, the truth remains:
This land shall be free, and to achieve the dream,
Victory at the polls was our steadfast hope.
He won — my father, like so many fathers dreaming—
My people, my homeland, shall live with soaring pride.

Oh my independence, I met you in the fearing March,
Four souls fell, shot cold beside the river’s edge.
The crimson tide awoke a void within my chest,
Amidst the lullabies, the cold winter’s shadow fell.

Oh my independence, I met you the night before the dawn—
Machine guns unleashed their deadly torrents wild,
Thousands surged through streets and student quarters,
Scattered like leaves, I fled with all the rest.
We left the city, breaking through muddy rivers,
Into the village’s heart—our hopes vast, fierce, and raw.

Oh my independence, I met you beside the railway’s edge,
Thousands, tens of thousands on the village road,
At dawn, they fled, flowing like a rushing stream,
“Run, run! The Pakistani fiends approach!” the cry—
In my land, countless ants like they kill us —
Women, children, and old men were crushed along the way.

Oh my independence, I met you by the border’s pillar—
Mother clasped the younger ones while the elders stood armed,
Weary from the long, harsh trek—twenty-five miles gone,
Father was far away with a band of freedom fighters—
Unaware we yet breathe, alive beside that stone—
Holding on to hope at the border’s cold embrace.

Oh my independence, I met you in my mother’s whispered prayers,
Chanting the blessings of the Prophet Yunus each month’s day,
Father out on the battlefield with youth beside him,
The tender touch of love withheld in the dark,
Soldiers assured, “Fear not, your father shall return.”

Oh my independence, I met you at the secret funeral rites—
Pain clenched deep inside my chest, compressed and sharp,
Two days later, father returned from the alive, unbeaten,
Had not fallen on that fierce and cruel field of war.

Oh my independence, I met you in the burnt earth of December,
Leaving Raiganj, a refugee shelter behind, inside my own country—
Since then, O my independence, you and I have journeyed close.
