German Chancellor Publicly Condemns Israeli Attacks on Gaza

The Voice News: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has openly criticized Israel for its ongoing military operations in Gaza, stating that the bombings are no longer justifiable. Speaking at a press conference in Turku, Finland, Merz said, “What is currently happening can no longer be explained under the justification of fighting Hamas. The airstrikes in Gaza are unacceptable.”

This marks one of the strongest and clearest statements from German leadership since the October 2023 Hamas attacks and subsequent Israeli response. Historically, Germany has maintained a special responsibility toward Israel due to its Nazi-era past. However, Merz’s remarks signal a potential shift in that stance.

He further stated, “It no longer appears that the Israeli attacks in Gaza are achieving anti-terror objectives. I am compelled to say this publicly—these actions are no longer reasonable.”

Merz’s comments are significant considering that after winning the February elections, he had pledged to welcome Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Berlin, despite an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court.

Following Merz’s remarks, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also voiced similar criticism. Members of the coalition partner Social Democratic Party (SPD) have called for a halt to arms exports to Israel.

Recent surveys indicate shifting public opinion in Germany, with a majority now opposing arms shipments to Israel. Analysts believe this could be part of a broader policy reassessment within the European Union, as countries like Canada, France, and the United Kingdom have also warned Israel of possible consequences over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Israeli Embassy in Berlin responded by saying, “Friedrich Merz is our friend. When he offers criticism, we listen carefully.”
