Dhaka, 18 May 2025 (Sunday): A group of dismissed or released former members of the Bangladesh Army staged a protest at the premises of the National Press Club in Dhaka. They voiced several demands, including reinstatement in service, withdrawal of disciplinary actions, and financial compensation.
In an effort to reach a peaceful resolution, a delegation from the Bangladesh Army visited the protest site and attentively listened to the demonstrators’ concerns. The delegation assured them that their demands would be thoroughly reviewed and addressed in accordance with existing military rules and regulations. They also advised the former personnel to submit their grievances directly to the appropriate authorities, rather than through any third party or external platform.
Notably, on 14 May 2025, the Bangladesh Army reported that it had received a total of 802 such appeals. Of these, 106 cases have already been resolved, while the remaining applications are currently under active review, with a commitment to handle them with sincerity and humanitarian consideration.
Regrettably, certain incidents during today’s events have raised concerns regarding the conduct of some participants. Following two successful rounds of dialogue, as the army delegation was departing, a few unruly individuals allegedly provoked disruptions. They blocked the delegation’s vehicle, hurled bricks and stones at law enforcement personnel, and chanted abusive slogans. Despite the army’s restraint and empathy throughout the day, the law enforcement authorities were ultimately compelled to take action to disperse the disorderly crowd.
The Bangladesh Army emphasizes that any incitement, behavior against public interest, or actions that undermine the dignity of the armed forces are unacceptable. The institution continues to approach the matter with patience, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility. The army reiterates its call for all parties to act responsibly, in full respect of the constitutional framework and the values of discipline and order.
