India Expresses Concern Over Ban on Awami League, Renews Call for Inclusive Elections in Bangladesh

New Delhi | 13 May 2025

India has officially expressed concern over the recent ban on Bangladesh’s Awami League as a political party, calling the move troubling and urging the immediate restoration of democratic processes in the country.

At a press briefing held in New Delhi on Tuesday evening, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue in response to a journalist’s question. “The imposition of restrictions on the Awami League without following due process is a matter of serious concern,” Jaiswal stated.

He further added, “As a democratic country, India is naturally concerned by the way democratic freedoms are being curtailed and the political space in Bangladesh is shrinking.”

The Indian government also reiterated its longstanding demand for the swift organization of elections in Bangladesh. “We strongly support the call for a free, fair, and inclusive election in Bangladesh at the earliest,” Jaiswal affirmed.

Since the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August last year, India has consistently emphasized the importance of holding inclusive elections that represent the will of the Bangladeshi people. New Delhi’s latest remarks reflect growing regional unease over the state of democracy and governance in its neighboring country.
