Journalist Attacked with Bricks by Miscreants in Bangladesh

Journalist Riaz Hossain from Ekattor Television was brutally attacked with bricks by a group of miscreants in Rupganj, Narayanganj, Bangladesh . The incident occurred on the night of May 7 at the journalist’s office in the Shomu Market area of Sector 3 in Purbachal.

The accused include Faruk Molla, son of Salam Molla of Rupganj Sadar Union, and his sons Badhan Molla, Imon Molla, and Fahim Molla. Others involved are Suman Molla, son of Siddiq Molla; Kajol Molla, son of Wosiuddin Molla; and Rizvi, son of the late Nasir Molla.

According to Riaz Hossain, he had a previous dispute with Faruk Molla. On Wednesday night, Faruk and his associates, including four or five unidentified individuals, launched a premeditated attack on him. They struck him with bricks on his head, neck, and back.

He added that his friend Masud Chowdhury rushed to help upon hearing his screams but was also severely beaten. Locals responded to their cries for help, prompting the attackers to flee after threatening to kill them.

Both victims were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred them to a private hospital for advanced treatment.

Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Liaqat Ali confirmed that police were dispatched immediately upon receiving the report. He assured that efforts are underway to bring the attackers to justice swiftly.

Growing Concern Over Attacks on Journalists in Bangladesh

This attack adds to the growing list of violent incidents against journalists in Bangladesh. Media professionals across the country often face threats, intimidation, and physical violence, especially when reporting on crime, corruption, or politically sensitive issues. According to human rights watchdogs, dozens of journalists have been assaulted or harassed in recent years, with many cases remaining unresolved due to political influence or weak law enforcement responses.

Journalists’ unions and advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger protections and independent investigations into such attacks. The use of digital security laws has also raised concerns about press freedom, with journalists facing legal harassment for critical reporting.

The assault on Riaz Hossain highlights the urgent need for ensuring safety and legal protection for journalists, especially those working at the grassroots level. The journalism community has condemned the attack and demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
