US Urges India to Work with Pakistan to Ease Kashmir Tensions

Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. The situation has raised fears of a potential military conflict, with Indian intelligence reportedly suggesting the possibility of an attack on Pakistan.

In response, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate the situation. According to reports by Reuters and TRT Global, Rubio conveyed this message during phone calls with senior leaders from both countries.

During his conversation with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio expressed condolences for the victims of the Pahalgam attack and reiterated the US commitment to working with India against terrorism. However, he also advised India to exercise caution in assigning blame to Pakistan, as no conclusive evidence has been shared publicly.

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that Rubio emphasized the importance of reducing tensions and maintaining peace and stability in South Asia. In a separate call with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Rubio condemned the attack and urged Pakistan to cooperate in the investigation.

Sharif, in turn, accused India of provocative behavior that undermines regional peace and Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts. He called on the US to pressure India to act responsibly and use restrained language.

The two nations have already taken retaliatory steps: India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and revoked visas for Pakistani citizens, while Pakistan has banned Indian airlines from using its airspace and suspended trade and the Simla Agreement.
