The High Court has granted bail to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case. The bench of Justice Md. Ataur Rahman and Justice Md. Ali Reza passed the order on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Chinmoy Das was represented by lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, while Barrister Anik R Haque and Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan represented the state.
According to his lawyer, there are now no legal barriers to Chinmoy Das’s release from jail.
Previously, on February 4, the High Court issued a rule asking why he should not be granted bail. The sedition case was filed on October 31, 2024, after Chinmoy led a large rally of the Hindu community in Chattogram on October 25. He and 18 others were accused of dishonoring the national flag.
Another rally took place in Rangpur on November 22. Chinmoy Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25 and denied bail the following day by the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate. Following the court’s order, a clash occurred between his followers and law enforcement outside the court, during which a lawyer named Saiful Islam Alif was killed.
Chinmoy Das remained in jail since then, and his earlier bail petition was rejected by the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on January 2, 2025. He then appealed to the High Court, which has now granted him bail.
